Fri Aug 29 18:13:57 BST 2008 /GPG-KEY: Added ARMedslack Linux Project GPG key. All of the packages have been signed with the new ARMedslack GPG key. You can import the GPG key into your keyring using either of the two methods below: Retrieving from the key server: gpg --recv-keys 456723FD \ --keyserver hkp://subkeys.pgp.net Import directly from the root of the 'armedslack-11.0' directory tree: gpg --import GPG-KEY Also, the package description .txt files have been re-created for all packages to ensure that they are up to date. Please note that this tree is unmaintained. However, I would like to be sure that anybody downloading it can verify the authenticity of the packages. Stuart Winter. +--------------------------+ This is ARMedslack 11.0! It's not released as such but I am currently working on bringing armedslack-current up to Slackware-current, with gcc-4.1.1 and glibc-2.5, so that branch is going to become pretty broken for a while. This is a very stable OS - so it's now frozen. Thu Jan 18 19:55:10 GMT 2007 x/x11-*-arm-5.tgz: Rebuilt to re-include the RiscPC keymap file inside /etc/X11/xkb/keycodes/riscpc In the build script I'd commented out the patch that creates this file, probably because I thought it wasn't required with Linux 2.6. Even though the RiscPC still needs some keymap work, it wasn't helping matters to have xorg.conf reference this missing keycode file. +--------------------------+ Sat Jan 6 12:32:26 GMT 2007 armedslack-extra/packages/nano-2.0.2-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to nano 2.0.2 +--------------------------+ Sat Dec 30 19:43:03 GMT 2006 bootware/riscos/slackb.zip: Rebuilt with latest color.gz. In GRUB, change the "Booting ' ' That space after the apostrophe was bugging me since I introduced GRUB into ARMedslack ;-) Updated the RAM disk size to 9090K rootdisks/color.gz: Made the initrd larger so that there's more temporary scratch space for the installer. The previous release fell short on space which meant that menus and package description displays were failing. +--------------------------+ Sat Dec 30 09:14:19 GMT 2006 a/acorn-fdisk-3.0.6-arm-3.tgz: Patched acorn-fdisk to support 6 IDE devices. This allows 2 motherboard + 4 IDE on a 3rd party controller (e.g. RapIDE). bootware/riscos/slackb.zip: Rebuilt with latest color.gz. rootdisks/color.gz: Patched /sbin/probe script - run /sbin/partprobe if running on a RiscPC Display a text dialog whilst this is happening. Thanks to Mark Smith for bringing this to my attention again. I tested this by making a partition table on /dev/hda, checking /proc/partitions, then dd'ing away the partition table so that fdisk could not see it. However, after running partprobe, /proc/partitions still showed the old partitions on /dev/hda. This *has* worked before - I will leave in this addition but recommend that if you have any weirdness with the installer, filesystems and partitions, to make the partitions then reboot back into the installer. - New script 'acorn-fdisk-wrapper' strips out the additional 'Start' column from the 'acorn-fdisk -l' output; this was causing the installer to display incorrect partition sizes. Thanks to Jawkins for the line of sed that does this. - included the patched acorn-fdisk binary. +--------------------------+ Mon Dec 25 14:15:55 GMT 2006 xap/mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.1. This release fixes a severe and exploitable bug in earlier versions of gnupg. All gnupg users should update to the new packages as soon as possible. For details, see the information concerning CVE-2006-6235 posted on lists.gnupg.org: http://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-announce/2006q4/000491.html The CVE entry for this issue may be found here: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6235 This update also addresses a more minor security issue possibly exploitable when GnuPG is used in interactive mode. For more information about that issue, see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6169 (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Sun Dec 3 11:50:16 GMT 2006 a/tar-1.16-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to tar-1.16. This fixes an issue where files may be extracted outside of the current directory, possibly allowing a malicious tar archive, when extracted, to overwrite any of the user's files (in the case of root, any file on the system). For more information, see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6097 (* Security fix *) l/libpng-1.2.14-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to libpng-1.2.14. This fixes a bug where a specially crafted PNG file could crash applications that use libpng. For more information, see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-5793 (* Security fix *) n/proftpd-1.3.0a-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to proftpd-1.3.0a plus an additional security patch. Several security issues were found in proftpd that could lead to the execution of arbitrary code by a remote attacker, including one in mod_tls that does not require the attacker to be authenticated first. For more information, see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-5815 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6170 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6171 (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Mon Nov 13 21:14:12 GMT 2006 xap/mozilla-thunderbird-1.5.0.8-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to thunderbird-1.5.0.8. This upgrade fixes several possible security bugs. For more information, see: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html#thunderbird (* Security fix *) xap/seamonkey-1.0.6-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to seamonkey-1.0.6. This upgrade fixes several possible security bugs. For more information, see: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html#seamonkey (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Mon Nov 6 22:33:02 GMT 2006 kde/qca-tls-1.0-arm-3.tgz: Rebuilt to place the plugin in /usr/lib/qt-3.3.7/plugins/crypto/. kde/qt-3.3.7-arm-1-tgz: Upgraded to qt-x11-free-3.3.7. This fixes an issue with Qt's handling of pixmap images that causes Qt linked applications to crash if a specially crafted malicious image is loaded. Inspection of the code in question makes it seem unlikely that this could lead to more serious implications (such as arbitrary code execution), but it is recommended that users upgrade to the new Qt package. For more information, see: http://www.trolltech.com/company/newsroom/announcements/press.2006-10-19.5434451733 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-4811 (* Security fix *) n/bind-9.3.2_P2-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to bind-9.3.2-P2. This fixes some security issues related to previous fixes in OpenSSL. The minimum OpenSSL version was raised to OpenSSL 0.9.7l and OpenSSL 0.9.8d to avoid exposure to known security flaws in older versions (these patches were already issued for Slackware). If you have not upgraded yet, get those as well to prevent a potentially exploitable security problem in named. In addition, the default RSA exponent was changed from 3 to 65537. RSA keys using exponent 3 (which was previously BIND's default) will need to be regenerated to protect against the forging of RRSIGs. For more information, see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-4339 (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Sat Nov 4 11:34:49 GMT 2006 ap/screen-4.0.3-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to screen-4.0.3. This addresses an issue with the way screen handles UTF-8 character encoding that could allow screen to be crashed (or possibly code to be executed in the context of the screen user) if a specially crafted sequence of pseudo-UTF-8 characters are displayed withing a screen session. For more information, see: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-4573 (* Security fix *) n/php-4.4.4-arm-2.tgz: Patched the UTF-8 overflow. I'm aware that unless you have permission, you aren't allowed to call the product 'Mozilla Firefox', so I am happy to keep the browser named 'Bon Echo'. However, the package *file name* will remain 'mozilla-firefox'. +--------------------------+ Sun Oct 15 10:06:42 BST 2006 a/kernel_riscpc-2.6.18.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded RiscPC Kernel to Linux 2.6.18.1. This Kernel does not work with the ARMedslack installer initrd: it does not get further than freeing the memory for INIT. This problem also exists with the 'Versatile' Kernel. I have tried various things such as upgrading busybox, replacing /sbin/init with different versions -- nothing works. For the RiscPC, I have left the !SlackBt with the older 2.6.14.6 Kernel. However, this does need to be fixed -- particularly for the 'Versatile' so that the installer can be used within QEMU full system emulation. a/kernel-modules_riscpc-2.6.18.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded RiscPC Kernel modules for Linux 2.6.18.1. a/kernel_versatile-2.6.18.1-arm-1.tgz: Added a Linux 2.6.18.1 Kernel for the ARM Versatile board. a/kernel-modules_versatile-2.6.18.1-arm-1.tgz: Added Kernel modules for the ARM Versatile board. +--------------------------+ Wed Oct 11 21:24:10 BST 2006 a/glibc-solibs-2.3.6-arm-7.tgz: Recompiled against Linux 2.6.18 headers. a/glibc-zoneinfo-2.3.6-noarch-7.tgz: Rebuilt. d/kernel-headers-2.6.18-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to Linux 2.6.18 Kernel headers. l/glibc-2.3.6-arm-7.tgz: Rebuilt against Linux 2.6.18 headers. l/glibc-i18n-2.3.6-noarch-7.tgz: Rebuilt. l/glibc-profile-2.3.6-arm-7.tgz: Recompiled against Linux 2.6.18 headers. +--------------------------+ Fri Oct 6 19:47:35 BST 2006 a/gpm-1.20.1-arm-2.tgz: Modified /var/log/setup/setup.mouse to display available/known ARM mouse types as "PS2" and "USB" rather than "RiscPC", "Iyonix" and so on; "USB" and "PS2" are appropriate to far more ARM devices than those two architectures. a/kernel-modules_riscpc-2.6.14.6-arm-3.tgz: Added a modprobe line for the VIDC driver into /etc/rc.d/rc.modules. a/kernel_riscpc-2.6.14.6-arm-2.tgz: Compiled the VIDC (sound driver) as a module. Added SCSI support and compiled in PowerTec, CUMANA et al as modules. From past experience, when compiled into the Kernel, they cause a Kernel panic. I haven't tested these as modules. +--------------------------+ Wed Oct 4 22:47:32 BST 2006 a/aaa_elflibs-11.0-arm-2.tgz: Rebuilt with the latest packages. a/kernel-modules_riscpc-2.6.14.6-arm-1.tgz: Added a line to load the Kernel module for the RiscPC mouse. d/oprofile-0.9.1-arm-2.tgz: Rebuilt. n/nfs-utils-1.0.10-arm-3.tgz: /sbin/rpc.{lockd,statd} were missing due to a build script feature. +--------------------------+ Mon Oct 2 22:20:05 BST 2006 a/aaa_base-11.0.0-noarch-2.tgz: Updated initial e-mail. +--------------------------+ Sun Oct 1 20:49:06 BST 2006 a/etc-11.0-noarch-2.tgz: Added missing comment marks (#) for distcc ports in /etc/services. n/popa3d-1.0.2-arm-2.tgz: Do better checking of passwd and group to avoid adding redundant entries to these files. n/sendmail-8.13.8-arm-3.tgz: Do better checking of passwd and group to avoid adding redundant entries to these files. n/sendmail-cf-8.13.8-noarch-3.tgz: Rebuilt. +--------------------------+ Sat Sep 30 16:47:23 BST 2006 l/libgpod-0.4.0-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to libgpod-0.4.0. l/pango-1.12.4-arm-1.tgz: Fixed bogus empty GPOS table warning and other minor bugs. l/shared-mime-info-0.19-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to shared-mime-info-0.19. +--------------------------+ Fri Sep 29 18:47:19 BST 2006 a/openssl-solibs-0.9.8d-arm-1.tgz: pgraded to shared libraries from openssl-0.9.8d. See openssl package update below. (* Security fix *) ap/cdrtools-2.01-arm-2.tgz: Added mkisofs-riscos which is a patched mkisofs that has support for RISC OS file system attributes. This will be used to create a !SlackBt that can run directly from the CD (in theory). n/openssh-4.4p1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to openssh-4.4p1. This fixes a few security related issues. From the release notes found at http://www.openssh.com/txt/release-4.4: * Fix a pre-authentication denial of service found by Tavis Ormandy, that would cause sshd(8) to spin until the login grace time expired. * Fix an unsafe signal hander reported by Mark Dowd. The signal handler was vulnerable to a race condition that could be exploited to perform a pre-authentication denial of service. On portable OpenSSH, this vulnerability could theoretically lead to pre-authentication remote code execution if GSSAPI authentication is enabled, but the likelihood of successful exploitation appears remote. * On portable OpenSSH, fix a GSSAPI authentication abort that could be used to determine the validity of usernames on some platforms. Links to the CVE entries will be found here: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-4924 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-5051 http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-5052 After this upgrade, make sure the permissions on /etc/rc.d/rc.sshd are set the way you want them. Future upgrades will respect the existing permissions settings. Thanks to Manuel Reimer for pointing out that upgrading openssh would enable a previously disabled sshd daemon. Do better checking of passwd, shadow, and group to avoid adding redundant entries to these files. Thanks to Menno Duursma. (* Security fix *) n/openssl-0.9.8d-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to openssl-0.9.8d. This fixes a few security related issues: During the parsing of certain invalid ASN.1 structures an error condition is mishandled. This can result in an infinite loop which consumes system memory (CVE-2006-2937). (This issue did not affect OpenSSL versions prior to 0.9.7) Thanks to Dr S. N. Henson of Open Network Security and NISCC. Certain types of public key can take disproportionate amounts of time to process. This could be used by an attacker in a denial of service attack (CVE-2006-2940). Thanks to Dr S. N. Henson of Open Network Security and NISCC. A buffer overflow was discovered in the SSL_get_shared_ciphers() utility function. An attacker could send a list of ciphers to an application that uses this function and overrun a buffer. (CVE-2006-3738) Thanks to Tavis Ormandy and Will Drewry of the Google Security Team. A flaw in the SSLv2 client code was discovered. When a client application used OpenSSL to create an SSLv2 connection to a malicious server, that server could cause the client to crash (CVE-2006-4343). Thanks to Tavis Ormandy and Will Drewry of the Google Security Team. Added /media directory, subdirectories, and symbolic links recommended by the FHS. a/etc-11.0-noarch-1.tgz: Fixed a bug in /etc/csh.login that caused repeated use of "csh -l" to duplicate search directories in the $path. Clearly /etc/csh.login should set the path just as /etc/profile does. This bug dates back at at least 1997, maybe earlier, so congratulations to Dimitar Zhekov for winning this release's "smite the oldest bug" award. Added distcc port to /etc/services. a/pkgtools-11.0.0-arm-3.tgz: Made upgradepkg a little bit more gentle -- if it is run on a corrupted .tgz it will no longer remove the original package. Thanks to Ric Anderson for the report. Added rc.scanluns to the services setup menu. a/sysvinit-2.84-arm-18.tgz: Fixed path to /sbin/initscript shown in init.8 a/sysvinit-2.84-arm-18.tgz: Fixed path to /sbin/initscript shown in init.8 (again). Some of the bugs have possible security implications if gzip or its tools are fed a carefully constructed malicious archive. Most of these issues were recently discovered by Tavis Ormandy and the Google Security Team. Thanks to them, and also to the ALT and Owl developers for cleaning up the patch. In the case of the 2.6+ kernel, these are included with the kernel-modules package. For 2.4, the modules would have to be built by the end user. Also, there is still no startup script included for this package, but that's something that will be looked at for the next development cycle. Removed the mkdev.sh after including the i2c devices in the devs package. ap/vim-7.0.109-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to vim-7.0.109. d/subversion-1.4.0-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. kde/amarok-1.4.3-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to amarok-1.4.3. Added plugins linked with libgpod, libmtp, and libnjb. kde/kdesdk-3.5.4-arm-2.tgz: Recompiled with configure flags that allow the apr libraries to be found. l/arts-1.5.4-arm-4.tgz: Patched an annoying bug where audio programs such as ogg123 would not work unless KDE had been run first. l/desktop-file-utils-0.11-arm-1.tgz: Added desktop-file-utils-0.11. The next XFce will need this freedesktop.org package. l/libexif-0.6.13-arm-2.tgz: Fixed libexif.pc includedir. l/libungif-4.1.4-arm-3.tgz: Added the utilities in /usr/bin, some of which are used to detect that annoying image spam that's on the rise. l/neon-0.25.5-arm-1.tgz: Added neon package, split from subversion-deps-1.4.0. n/mailx-12.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to mailx-12.1 from nail-11.25 (renamed). n/nfs-utils-1.0.10-arm-2.tgz: Moved rpc.lockd and rpc.statd to /sbin. Reworked rc.nfsd to make use of the rc.rpc script in "portmap". n/portmap-5.0-arm-2.tgz: Replaced /etc/rc.d/rc.portmap with /etc/rc.d/rc.rpc. This script will start rpc.portmap, rpc.lockd, and rpc.statd. All of these are needed to make proper use of NFS from either the server or client side, so this approach should be more likely to work out of the box. Note that nfs-utils will also be required in order to use rc.rpc or NFS, even as a client. If rc.rpc is needed, another script will run it as long as it is readable. This crashes sendmail's queue processing daemon, which in turn can lead to two problems: depending on the settings, these crashed processes may create coredumps which could fill a drive partition; and such a malformed message in the queue will cause queue processing to cease when the message is reached, causing messages that are later in the queue to not be processed. The Slackware changelog says this: Patched rc.hotplug. On 2.4 kernels use /sbin/hotplug for hotpluging, but on 2.6 kernels use /sbin/udevsend (if udev is being used) instead. This should work better on systems using 2.6 kernels with udev and HAL. Among the people pushing for this change for a while: Jon Grosshart, Piter Punk, and Eugene Crosser. Blacklisted hw_random after reports that it causes some systems to crash. Note that rc.hotplug is now installed as rc.hotplug.new, but upgradepkg will still replace it for one more package iteration. This will cause hotplug to be made executable on machines where it currently is not, so be aware of that. a/slocate-3.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. This release fixes a security issue discovered by Ulf Harnhammar. libcurl uses the given file part of a TFTP URL in a manner that allows a malicious user to overflow a heap-based memory buffer due to the lack of boundary check. This overflow happens if you pass in a URL with a TFTP protocol prefix ("tftp://"), using a valid host and a path part that is longer than 512 bytes. The affected flaw can be triggered by a redirect, if curl/libcurl is told to follow redirects and an HTTP server points the client to a tftp URL with the characteristics described above. There is no known exploit at the time of this writing. The cURL advisory may be found here: http://curl.haxx.se/docs/adv_20060320.html The CVE entry for this issue may be found here: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-1061 (* Security fix *) n/epic4-2.4-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. n/openldap-client-2.3.20-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. slacktrack/slacktrack-1.28-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. xap/xvim-6.4.010-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. +--------------------------+ Fri Mar 24 19:37:46 GMT 2006 l/cairo-1.0.4-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. l/gtk+2-2.8.16-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. n/dnsmasq-2.27-arm-7.tgz: Upgraded to this version. n/sendmail-8.13.6-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. This new version of sendmail contains a fix for a security problem discovered by Mark Dowd of ISS X-Force. From sendmail's advisory: Sendmail was notified by security researchers at ISS that, under some specific timing conditions, this vulnerability may permit a specifically crafted attack to take over the sendmail MTA process, allowing remote attackers to execute commands and run arbitrary programs on the system running the MTA, affecting email delivery, or tampering with other programs and data on this system. Sendmail is not aware of any public exploit code for this vulnerability. This connection-oriented vulnerability does not occur in the normal course of sending and receiving email. It is only triggered when specific conditions are created through SMTP connection layer commands. Sendmail's complete advisory may be found here: http://www.sendmail.com/company/advisory/index.shtml The CVE entry for this issue may be found here: http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-0058 (* Security fix *) n/sendmail-cf-8.13.6-noarch-1.tgz: Upgraded to sendmail 8.13.6 config files. x/x11-6.9.0-arm-2.tgz: Patched with x11r6.9.0-geteuid.diff. To partly revert to the old behaviour the new option --allow-multisig-verification may be used. Noteworthy changes in version 1.4.2.1 (2006-02-14) * Security fix for a verification weakness in gpgv. Some input could lead to gpgv exiting with 0 even if the detached signature file did not carry any signature. This is not as fatal as it might seem because the suggestion as always been not to rely on the exit code but to parse the --status-fd messages. However it is likely that gpgv is used in that simplified way and thus we do this release. Same problem with "gpg --verify" but nobody should have used this for signature verification without checking the status codes anyway. Thanks to the taviso from Gentoo for reporting this problem. For the first time, I'm using the 'clean' sources from Slackware rather than Debian's heavily patched version. With the change to 'quilt' to manage the Debian patching, I didn't have the energy to work out how to fake running Debian on ARMedslack. What I have done instead, is take the small number of ARM-specific patches from Debian's diff, and apply them here. With previous versions of glibc this wasn't enough. Things are looking up :-) l/glibc-i18n-2.3.6-noarch-1.tgz: Upgraded internationalisation package to glibc-2.3.6. +--------------------------+ Sat Jan 21 20:26:29 GMT 2006 x/x11-6.9.0*arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version of X.org. Note that the RiscPC key mappings are still broken: page up, down, arrow keys etc don't work -- this can be fixed with xmodmap but by default they are unmapped. This needs fixing at some point, although I'm not sure what the answer is at the moment. +--------------------------+ Thu Jan 19 22:11:08 GMT 2006 n/openssh-4.2p1-arm-2.tgz: Modified /etc/rc.d/rc.sshd On a RiscPC it takes about 5 minutes to create the DSA key -- new users may incorrectly assume that the system has hung: before creating new SSH keys (usually done upon first boot after the OS installation), display a message informing the user that creating SSH keys can take a while on older hardware. armedslack-extra/packages/quilt-0.42-arm-1.tgz: Added quilt. Thanks to Jim Hawkins for patching the patch. - Added XFS, JFS and ReiserFS filesystem support. Thanks to Alan Hourihane for pointing out the missing filesystems. Note that currently there is no a/xfsprogs package, and that whilst XFS support will be offered by the installer, the support binaries are missing from the installer image. I'll fix this in the next few days. a/kernel-modules_riscpc-2.6.14.5-arm-1.tgz: Added a depmod to the build script to fix the missing 'modules.dep' file. extra/packages/mpg123-0.59r-arm-2.tgz: Rebuilt with Debian's diff v20. From Debian's changelog: * httpget.c: Fix integer overflows in http parser, introduced by security patch for CAN-2004-0982. * httpget.c: Ensure minimum size of receive buffer to fix regression in 0.59r-18, caused by patch for CAN-2004-0982. Closes: #294801 +--------------------------+ Sun Jan 1 20:23:07 GMT 2006 a/acorn-fdisk-3.0.6-arm-1.tgz: Patched to refer to partition type 82 as "Linux" rather than "Linux Native" and "Linux swap" rather than "Linux Swap". This is the behaviour of the real fdisk. The purpose of this patch is so that we can use acorn-fdisk in the ARMedslack installer in place of fdisk, due to a niggle with the real fdisk displaying RISC OS Filecore partitions as "Linux". However, acorn-fdisk does not know about all Linux partitions such as "Linux raid autodetect". At present this isn't an issue but it may need to be resolved later. a/kernel-2.6.14.5-riscpc-1.tgz: Upgraded to Linux 2.6.14.5. Removed the Tux logo from the framebuffer. It took up too much screen space and I've never liked it since I first booted Linux with framebuffer enabled some years ago :-) a/kernel-modules-2.6.14.5-riscpc-1.tgz: Upgraded to Linux 2.6.14.5 modules. bootware/riscpc/slackb-grub-riscos-2_cvs-1-linux2.6.14.5-01-Jan-2006.zip: Upgraded to Linux 2.6.14.5 kernel. Also patched the Slackware installer: within color.gz, - patched /sbin/probe to use acorn-fdisk rather than fdisk if it detects that it's running on 'Acorn' branded hardware. - fixed a bug in /etc/rc.d/rc.S that was causing an error message to be displayed if there was no /proc/pci file (the file descriptor redirection was broken). - fixed a bug in /usr/lib/setup/setup where fgrep was used when it should have been egrep, causing partitions not to be found. - updated /usr/lib/setup/SeTswap for Linux 2.6 - the format of /proc/meminfo has changed. Also fix a bug where a 'cat' had gone missing :-) - patched /usr/lib/setup/SeTpartitions to ignore "nodev" filesystems in /proc/filesystems (otherwise "nodev flutexfs" is matched by "grep xfs"). - patched /usr/lib/setup/SeTPKG to do an rm -rf $TMP/series file since /usr/lib/setup/slackinstall uses the same path as a directory. Depending on the order you select stuff from in the 'setup' script, you can get to a point where you cannot continue unless you manually wipe out the temp file/dir. Each series now has both .txt (package description) files for each .tgz package; there are 'tagfile' files and maketag files. You can now run 'setup' and select the packages you wish to install. So far I have only tested 'expert' mode which seems to work. This is just a first run through - the installer is still far from complete but it's a good start. I've written a script to process the Slackware tagfiles and automatically produce the new ones for ARMedslack. Any missing packages are listed in slackware//missingpackages.txt which will help identify any packages which may be accidentally forgotten about in the future. For RiscPC users, you no longer need to use an existing x86 Slackware box to install. You can now use !InstallAS from the bootware/riscpc/slackb*.zip file and boot into the installer. From here you can: ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.19 # whatever IP you'd use on your network mkdir /host rpc.portmap # Mount the export on the NFS host (replace 192.168.1.1 with its real IP): mount 192.168.1.1:/path/to/armedslacktree /host I won't get into that any further because I'd rather work on porting the installer than writing soon-to-be-obsolete documentation :-) Happy new year! :-) +--------------------------+ Tue Dec 27 21:22:03 GMT 2005 armedslack-extra/packages/iftop-0.17pre3-arm-1.tgz: Added a pre-release of iftop; a curses based network activity monitor. Once ARMedslack is released, this archive will be renamed "slackb.zip". +--------------------------+ Tue Nov 8 19:21:48 GMT 2005 a/kernel-2.6.13-riscpc-1.tgz: Reverted to Linux 2.6.13 for the time being. 2.6.14 was Kernel panicing at random. Hopefully this downgrade will solve this. If not then I'm guessing that it's a problem introduced with the recent update of gcc 3.4. I'll test this and update the SlackBoot zip file shortly. kde/koffice-1.4.1-arm-2.tgz: Patched. Fixes a buffer overflow in KWord's RTF import discovered by Chris Evans. Thanks again to Timothy for the port and for helping debug the teething problems I experienced when building GRUB, and for patching gccsdk's RISC OS filetype support into the latest release of infozip: now the boot loader zip file creation is entirely scripted! :-) Upgraded the Kernel to Linux 2.6.13.4. a/gpm-1.19.6-arm-2.tgz: Patched /usr/sbin/mouseconfig to use /dev/input/mouse & the PS2 protocol for the RiscPC. This patch is makes mouseconfig RiscPC/Linux 2.6 compatible. Thanks to Jim Hawkins for pointing this out about 8 months ago ;-) I'm slowly working through the longterm-todo list. Also upgraded to Debian diff v21 which includes a number of additional fixes. a/kernel-2.6.13.4-riscpc-1.tgz: Upgraded to Linux 2.6.13.4. For the first time, this Kernel includes support for ARM6 and ARM7. Thanks to Timothy Baldwin for his ARM6 patch. a/kernel-modules-2.6.13.4-riscpc-1.tgz: Rebuilt to include the versioned modules directory for 2.6.13.4. Remember that there are no modules in this package - just place holder directories. All drivers are compiled into the kernel because there are so few of them! a/syslinux-2.13-arm-1.tgz: Added SYSLINUX but only including the /usr/share/syslinux data. The purpose of this package is for an administrator of an ARMedslack box to readily find the memdisk and pxelinux.0 files in order to serve boot disks to x86 PXE clients. d/gcc*-3.4.4-arm-10.tgz: Upgraded to Debian diff 9 which includes updates from CVS 20051015. armedslack-extra/packages/twin-*.tgz: Removed. This fixes a security issue where URLs passed on the command line to the thunderbird shell script were not correctly protected against interpretation by the shell. As a result, a malicious URL could contain embedded shell commands which would then be executed as the user running Thunderbird. For more information, see: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html#Thunderbird (* Security fix *) xap/mozilla-firefox-1.0.7-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to firefox-1.0.7. RISC OS filetypes can be set in the zip files by suffixing the file name with ",xxx" where xxx is the hex RISC OS file type. For example, "!RunImage,ff8" would create the file "!RunImage" inside the zip file but set it to the "Absolute" (binary executable) RISC OS filetype. This option can be turned on with the new ',' operator to zip. e.g. # zip -,r9 foo.zip /foo Thanks to Timothy Baldwin for extracting this feature from gccsdk and applying it to the latest zip release. xap/mozilla-1.7.12-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to mozilla-1.7.12. This fixes several security issues. For more information, see: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/known-vulnerabilities.html#Mozilla (* Security fix *) +--------------------------+ Sun Oct 16 16:29:14 BST 2005 armedslack-extra/packages/putty-0.58-arm-1.tgz: Used version 0.58 release of PuTTY since it includes the man pages which always seem to be missing from the development snapshots, plus there's no good reason to use some random snapshot anymore (there was once upon a time due to the then-release of PuTTY being awful). The Windows .ico icons are also included in /usr/share/putty so that they can be used with KDE. armedslack-extra/packages/rdesktop-1.4.1-arm-1.tgz: Added rdesktop - an RDP client for connecting to Windows servers and so on. +--------------------------+ Fri Oct 14 22:13:42 BST 2005 a/openssl-solibs-0.9.7g-arm-2.tgz: Patched. Fixed a vulnerability that could, in rare circumstances, allow an attacker acting as a "man in the middle" to force a client and a server to negotiate the SSL 2.0 protocol (which is known to be weak) even if these parties both support SSL 3.0 or TLS 1.0. This build also adds the missing documents which needed sgml2xxx to be installed. a/floppy-5.5-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to fdutils version 5.5. Patch mtools with Tim Baldwin's patch to allow RISC OS file types & file name truncation. d/cvs-1.11.21-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. +--------------------------+ Sun Oct 2 23:16:15 BST 2005 Added a 'loft' directory which contains memorabilia from the early days of ARMedslack that I could not bare to delete ;-) Wed Sep 28 21:51:57 BST 2005 bootware/riscpc/slackb.zip: Rebuilt Kernel 2.6.13.1 with a patch from Jim Hawkins to allow booting into a compressed initrd. The installer is getting closer! Thanks Jim! :) Also rebuilt the 'color/gz' initrd to include the latest libraries and versions of the included components, although this is for experimental purposes only -- it's not a working installer but it does boot and look like x86 Slackware. I'm also experimenting with Tim Baldwin's port of GRUB to RISC OS. The menus will be a great advantage; it can be built from within Linux (great for me since I do not have a RISC OS C compiler) and GRUB will be maintained, unlike LinLoader. Thanks to Tim for his help with getting GRUB going and with writing the GRUB config file. +--------------------------+ Wed Sep 28 19:14:58 BST 2005 a/aaa_elflibs-10.2-arm-1.tgz: Rebuilt to include the latest shared objects. Added n/curl and l/expat to bring this package in line with that shipped with Slackware 10.2. +--------------------------+ Sun Sep 18 18:19:46 BST 2005 bootware/riscpc/slackb.zip: Upgraded to Linux 2.6.13.1 as the default Kernel. Also within this Zip file is a 'TODO' directory which contains the initial installer. Currently the installer has to run a Linux 2.4 kernel since 2.6 will not boot an initrd on a RiscPC due to some issues with memory space. I receive this error when booting 2.6.13.1 and previous 2.6 kernels. This is on a machine with 130MBytes of EDO RAM. The Kernel config file is here: ftp://ftp.armedslack.org/armedslack-current/source/k/configs/config-riscpc-linux-2.6 Linux version 2.6.13.1 (root@zippo) (gcc version 3.4.5 20050821 (prerelease)) #1 Sun Sep 18 14:40:58 BST 2005 CPU: StrongARM-110 [4401a103] revision 3 (ARMv4) Machine: Acorn-RiscPC initrd (0x00000000 - 0x00000023) extends beyond physical memory - disabling initrd Memory policy: ECC disabled, Data cache writeback On node 0 totalpages: 32768 DMA zone: 32768 pages, LIFO batch:15 Normal zone: 0 pages, LIFO batch:1 HighMem zone: 0 pages, LIFO batch:1 Built 1 zonelists A 2.4 Kernel would suffice for the installer apart from the age old keymap translation issue. I do not want to spend any time working around this issue - I'd rather the initrd problem was resolved in 2.6. But for now I'm pleased that my installer initrd at least boots and is reasonably sane :-) I hope to be able to spend some more time ARMifying the installer and ironing out the issues with gpm/mouse and the other stuff that lives in the file "armedslack-current/longterm-todo". a/kernel-2.6.13.1-riscpc-1.tgz: Upgraded to a Linux 2.6.13.1 Kernel for the RiscPC. This is compiled with gcc-3.4.5. Wrote a new package build script. a/kernel-modules-2.6.13.1-riscpc-1.tgz: Kernel modules for Linux 2.6.13.1. There are no modules in here since the range of hardware for the RiscPC is so slim that all drivers (apart from those which crash the Kernel - e.g. PowerTec SCSI) for supported hardware are compiled into the Kernel. Wrote a new package build script. a/sysvinit-2.84-arm-14.tgz: Patched /etc/rc.d/rc.S so to prevent setting the system time from the RTC when booting. I previously had patched rc.6 to prevent *saving* system time to the RTC on system shutdown, but with Linux 2.6.13.1 it appears that I need it here too. x/x11-6.8.2-*arm-2.tgz: All x11-6.8.2 packages rebuilt. ARMedslack will soon be using Linux 2.6 as its base Kernel, so I am now making the original unmodified i386 keymaps the default. I did consider modifiying the rc scripts to detect the RiscPC architecture and Kernel version and load the corresponding keymaps, but Linux 2.4 on the RiscPC has a number of bugs, so I'd rather people did not use it -- if a broken keyboard helps deter people then I'm quite happy :-) However, for any users who want to use a Kernel previous to 2.6, you need to # cd /usr/share/kbd # ln -fs keymaps-acorn-for-linux-2.4 keymaps d/gcc-*3.4.4-*-3.tgz: Upgraded to Debian diff v7 which includes updates from CVS. xap/imagemagick-6.1.9_0-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded to this version. xap/xscreensaver-4.19-arm-1.tgz: First build. testing/packages/gcc-3.3.5/gcc-*3.3.5-arm-2.tgz: Rebuilt with Debian diff v6 which includes updates from CVS. I didn't pay much attention to what was actually *in* the package, but rather focused on having dpkg working so that I could use it to apply Debian's patches. This package contained /usr/bin/md5sum which should not have been there (md5sum is in a/coreutils in Slackware). There is a lot of cruft in this package which I do not like but currently do not have time to sift through it. Please do not use this package unless you want to build d/gcc and/or l/glibc. I will be writing build scripts for the Kernel stuff shortly. a/kernel-modules-2.4.26-arm-1.tgz: Rebuilt d/kernel-headers-2.4.26-arm-1.tgz: Rebuilt +--------------------------+ Wed Oct 6 13:59:38 BST 2004 l/arts-1.2.3-arm-1.tgz: First build. xap/xmms-1.2.10-arm-2.tgz: Added arts plugin (xmms now depends on l/arts) +--------------------------+ Tue Oct 5 21:34:00 BST 2004 ap/flac-1.1.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded ap/vorbis-tools-1.0.1-arm-1.tgz: Rebuilt against flac l/zlib-1.2.2-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded (* Security fix *) n/dhcp-3.0.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded n/getmail-4.2.0-noarch-1.tgz: Upgraded (* Security fix *) n/sendmail-8.13.1-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded n/sendmail-cf-8.13.1-noarch-1.tgz: Upgraded +--------------------------+ Fri Oct 1 04:50:33 BST 2004 n/ppp-2.4.2-arm-1.tgz: First build. n/tcpdump-3.8.3-arm-1.tgz: Rebuilt. n/nn-6.6.4-arm-1.tgz: Rebuilt. n/rp-pppoe-3.5-arm-1.tgz: First build. n/stunnel-4.05-arm-1.tgz: First build. n/wireless-tools-26-arm-1.tgz: First build. n/yptools-2.8-arm-1.tgz: First build. n/dhcp-3.0pl2-arm-1.tgz: First build. n/netatalk-1.6.4-arm-1.tgz: First build. n/netwatch-1.0a-arm-1.tgz: First build. +--------------------------+ Wed Sep 29 18:41:16 BST 2004 ap/mdadm-1.7.0-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded l/lesstif-0.93.96-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded a/aaa_elflibs-9.2.0-arm-1.tgz: Rebuilt with the latest libraries and included gcc-3.4 support libraries as well as gcc-3.3.4's. Whilst I'd hoped to try and build everything with gcc-3.4, this is not possible without much patching. a/gawk-3.1.4-arm-1.tgz: Upgraded d/doxygen-1.3.8-arm-1.tgz: First build of this package. packages/gcc-3.3.4/gcc-*: Upgraded to Debian diff-15 (which makes it almost gcc-3.3.5) and changed toolchain name to 'arm-slackware-linux' to match the name gcc uses. Others: * Moved ARMedslack-specific docs/notes from various locations into armedslack-current/ARMedslack_Notes * Abandoned/removed all gcc-3.3 versions bar 3.3.4 from testing/ I only used to retain gcc-3.3.2 to build glibc, but I get a working build using gcc-3.3.4 now. The other gcc-3.3s would have required some work on their SlackBuild scripts and a recompile to rename the toolchain to arm-slackware-linux (see above). If anybody specifically wants these old versions then email me and I can rebuild them. ** I'm now providing a changelog! ** +--------------------------+ Mon Aug 30 10:43:39 BST 2004 Work is continuing on building the packages. +--------------------------+ Sun Jul 25 12:19:37 BST 2004 Please note that Whilst there *are* X packages in slackware/x, do NOT install them and expect X to work - there isn't even an X server in those packages; I am purely using them to build X apps against the libraries. I *do* have X compiled but it's in dire need of lots of ARM specific patches. The required patches are in Debian's xfree86 diff but need some modification for xorg. I'm still working on it. +--------------------------+ Sat Jul 24 22:30:56 BST 2004 I've taken the decision to rename my packages 'arm' rather than 'armv3'. The -armv3- arch identifier in package names is too cumbersome and also since gcc refers to ARM as 'arm', it prevents some problems with compilation. The original reason I chose 'armv3' in the package names was so that I could easily idenfity packages that would not run on a RiscPC (e.g. binary-only packages). However, I will now name any such packages as '-armv4-' or whatever the minimum architecture is for which they were compiled. +--------------------------+
